Both are great shifting transmissions and again the Ford top loader is super strong so there is a good demand for them. Cost wise it can vary greatly for a 4 speed top loader so look around for good deals.

It has made shifting a little better but not as good as I would like. I have tried the lighter weights and the synthetics and am now trying the 85-145. Best so far. Brian

I can tell you everything you need to know, I have 1 in my blown 460 (473) truck, and 2 backups in my shop. They were made from 1973 to 1987. They came in Ford trucks and vans behind 351w's and 300 6's. They are the same length as the traditional Mustang toploader .

I can tell you that it was very combersome to down-shift with. The lever was set up different though, (see link) but works basically the same.

I drained it and refilled it with Joe Gibbs Racing 80W-90 GL-4 rated gear oil. The trans is much harder to shift, especially downshifts from 3rd to 2nd.

It is very difficult to shift to second gear from first and down shifting it near about impossible. The gears don't grind it is just takes a lot of force to get the gear to engage. Sitting still the trans shifts fine.
Get a QuoteJan 02, 2020 · Just a quick note regarding my experience. I replaced my T-10 4-speed with a T5 and it really is fantastic for highway trips. The 5.0 is mild with only 315HP, so the T5 can handle that. I wouldn't push 400HP through a standard T5. As for gears, I am running an Eaton TruTrac with 3.25 gears in an 8".
